  1. One interesting fact about the civil war,was Lincoln's decision to implement the Emancipation Proclamation. It allowed slaves the right to learn how to read and write, and defend their freedom along side the Union.Shortly after the Emancipation, Lincoln established the 13th amendment which made slavery illegal throughout the United States.

  2. At the end of the Civil War, there were approximately 1030 casualties of war. This included 620,000 soldier deaths. Surprisingly, disease was to blame for a large number of these deaths. The unsanitary conditions gave rise to typhoid, dysentery, staph infections, etc. The death toll in the Civil War exceeds all of the country's other wars.

  3. One fact about the Civil War that I found interesting was that most of the deaths were caused by diseases and not by the hands of the enemy. This war actually lasted for 4 years? At what point do you say "enough", retreat and surrender?

  5. The American Civil War was the bloodiest conflict in American history which claimed millions of lives. Since the war started in 1838 to the time it ended it claimed over 900 million soldiers lives. The war started out over a disagreement between some southern and northern states regarding slavery and the taxation of cotton exports.

  6. An Interesting fact about the American Civil war is that in 4 years in went on for. There were more then 550 Union General's that served. Some of the Notable generals were Ulysses S. Grant, Phil Sheridan, George Armstrong Custer, and George McClellan. That's alot for four years, considering the wars of today that go alot longer.

  7. It has been estimated that the American Civil War cost 620,000 soldiers their lives. Surprisingly, two thirds of these men died from disease and not from battle. These diseases were mainly due to unsanitary conditions. The diseases ranged from typhoid, dysentery, staph infections, small pox, to name but a few. The Civil War has claimed more American lives than all the other American combat Wars combined.

While the Confederates lost approximately 94,000 and 164,000 to disease. Many of the soldiers who did survive with wounds and injuries had to have there limbs removed.

  9. Abraham Lincoln wished to abolish slavery and slavery was abolished after the Civil War by Lincoln. However, he was seemed to believe at heart that white and black people could not live together. We can know that by the fact that he had a plan to relocate all black people out of the United States.

  11. An Interesting fact regarding the civil war was there were 2,100,000 soldiers who represented the Union. Ulysses S. Grant became President of the US in 1869. Before then, he led an army of 533,000 men after being promoted to Lieutenant General in 1864.

  12. I find it interesting that most battles had two names. This is because the confederates typically named battles for the city in which they were fought and the union typically named battles after geographical features such as creeks and rivers. Another interesting fact is General Sickles (part of the Union) had his right leg amputated during the Battle of Gettysburg after a Confederate cannonball destroyed his leg and then preserved the bones from his right leg, as well as the cannonball, and donated them to the Army Medical Museum.
